Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, passed away as a young child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she quit school in the span of two years in order to explore a career in acting. This path was fraught with challenges. When she was offered a job at New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to find opportunities in the stage. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and returned to Boston. As an usherette, she worked in the mornings and performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
